on line reader - Newstand Version

Since the WSJ has introduced the Newstand Version it has been nothing but problems. Either you just get the "ads" with no copy. When you get copy often the second page will not appear and you have to reload the entire edition. Go back to the old version!!! Or get this one fixed quickly!! Or I will just stop my subscription and go to other sources for my business news

Cool JH - Slowwwww

So slow on ipad2 it's unusable

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

B851 - Love the WSJ, hate the app

The journal is great and I love reading it on the iPad - when it works. But the app hangs all the time, faults and disappears, fails to go to sections and articles, and is horribly slow to load. This is NOT because of my Internet connection. The web is blazingly fast, I have no troubles with the New York Times, and can stream Netflix in HD without problems. The WSJ is a bug ridden app. It has been this way for years, and given the brand and quality of this publication, it is embarrassing that they haven't fixed this.

MustReason - Newsstand, unstable, ads

Hate it being in newsstand. App crashes often and misbehaves in other ways. Despite being a paid subscriber, still inundated with ads. Don't get it.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

MakersAll - Terrible Update

The worst update ever. I'd like to pick up from where I left off after switching to a different app. Give me that back, then I will change my review back to 4 stars. If you guys make tapping on the news alert to take me straight to the news page, I will rate 5 stars.

Frustrated 4-26-13 - App increasingly unstable

In the past two weeks, I have found the WSJ app increasingly unstable to the point of frustration. It often closes on me in the middle of an article, and the process is repeated over and over again as I attempt to finish the article. To complete the article, I have to launch my browser and read it online - an unnecessary waste of time considering the cost of my subscription.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

OV85755 - APP doesn't work

Informed WSJ that app keeps crashing, they indicated they were aware and trying to fix. Their solution? Access via my PC. One star is generous rating !!

Wajdkcje - Memory hog

It's eating up lots of memory for mr e and I can't find a way to clean it up. The interface provides a good reading experience though.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

TC60045 - Consistently stale news

News through the App is consistently a day old -- relative to what is available via WSJ.com. As a digital subscriber, I find only 1 in 3 of the editorials is same day as is on the web site. That has to change, but they haven't fixed it and this app is pretty old. I would save the download and relegate yourself to getting WSJ via the web.

Jaecale - Bugs need fix!!!!

Every time i switch back to the app, pages have to refresh. Very troublesome to roll back to the page read last time. Please fix in the update!

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

DKeithHill - Routine Crashes

The most distressing issue is a crash in the middle of an article requiring a complete reload and drill down to get back to where you were. Also the app seems to take a long time to fully load. Don't quite get why that's required. Clearly this app is below the typically high standard of the paper itself and it's online service.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

astark85 - Does the job... Slowly

The content is good but the subscription is expensive. The app itself is pretty slow and will hog up your space. I have close to 1 GB in cache and there's no option to limit or clear it without deleting the app

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

b3nkt - Nice news

Like the content layout easy to read, that said i do not like the full paged scrolling.. Just stupid on a device like iPhone. The updates takes long time and on iPad it is unresponsive for a long time. Sorry but I stick to the much better NY Times app.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

iBeedone - fixable inconveniences lower worth

I've used this app for a year, and fixable inconveniences make it not worth the subscription: if you switch to another app in middle of reading an article, the app loses your place and returns to beginning of article; too often, it will not load/re-load, or reloads partially while blaming lack of WiFi even with otherwise-confirmed connectivity.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

cburque - Great content. Poor iPhone app.

I've been a long time reader of The WSJ on my iPhone and the latest release is a huge disappointment. Scrolling through articles is painfully difficult with the requirement to turn the page. iPad app is much better. Also, WSJ should add top 10 lists for most read and most e-mailed.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

Bull A++ - Should be 5 but 1

Wsj paper subscription should work for online also. But, new update made this not work so, when traveling, I miss most content online. Drops to 1 star.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

128945 - A waste really

You have to subscribe to this app to read the important articles. A waste really. Just about everything is subscriber content.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

WSJAppUser - WSJ

It's the slowest and most frustrating app in my phone. It takes ages to load and doesn't have continuous scrolling.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

Wakkau12 - A mistake to relocate to Newsstand

One extra step to open the app and crashed more often after relocating to Apple's Newsstand. It also takes much looooonger to load and the SAVE function does not always work. Would have stopped using it long time ago if not for the content.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

denver dermatologist - One of the worst news Apps

I LIKE the Wall Street Journal. I have read it almost every day since 1968. But t his app is horrible! It is MUCH WORSE than the New York Times app ( whose content is inferior to the WSJ). How do I hate it? Let me count the ways. 1) It takes forever to load. I tap its icon and MAYBE two minutes later I am able to read an article. This is with the fastest possible WiFi connection. 2). If I am reading an article and am interrupted, perhaps by an incoming phone call, perhaps by the end of my s*** on the toilet; when I return to the app, and depending on the time that has elapsed, I am returned not to where I left off, but rather to a) the beginning of the article I was reading or b) to the startup screen, the article that I was reading having been entirely lost and inaccessible. 3) It is EXTREMELY annoying that the articles are discretely paginated. The NYT and Economist apps are much easier to read because their articles can be scrolled continuously. This allows much faster reading because of one's ability to scan ahead. The old (~1 year ago) WSJ app had continuous scrolling. Why, WHY, WHY did you ruin it by splitting articles into discreet pages? These are MUCH harder to read.

Xoplmnhyt - X

No one west of New York City cares about Greater New York. Most of the news you print I see on TV. So why should I read it too?

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

So32146 - Slow and crashes

Takes too long to update. Very slow and buggy.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

MilesN - Can't control data downloads. Pages missing.

I despise this app for not being able to control whether I want the Now issue downloaded, which averages 150 MB. Also, numerous pages are missing every day on the standard downloaded issue. I use an iPad 3 with plenty of storage available. To top it all off, WSJ has terrible and unresponsive customer service. Of more than 100 app on my iPad, I despise this one the most.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

still worse, again - new versions

The newsstand access is inconvenient. Performance is slow. Frequently hangs or reboots. Used to return to wherever I was, now I have to start all over. Maybe they should fix at least some of the bugs before adding all the great new features. It still crashes, hangs, jumps to arbitrary places. If I walk away from an article for a few minutes, I want to resume where I was, not restart. Every new release still gets worse. I may have to go back to the browser.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

Broker720 - Horrible service!

Not sure what I pay $200 a year for, but it's definitely is NOT for updated billing systems. I will be a former subscriber very shortly!

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

Really Frustrated too - Frustrating!!,

Content great, but that's to be expected. Too many bugs. Trouble loading issues. WSJ help desk should be renamed "no help desk". They have no answers other than to delete the app and reload, which is not practical to keep doing. On average, every 3 days or so I have trouble downloading, get incomplete issues, with blank pages. Was then directed to go into questions menu and delete prior issues. Really? This is what I need to keep doing. WSJ needs to get their act together or eWorld going to pass them by. One more funny note, I tried to indicated "Frustrated" as my nickname for this review...but the name was taken. Now that's a surprise! Then I tried "Frustrated Too", also taken.

Loyal reader 55 - There is this concept of user testing!

There is this concept of user testing. Or perhaps development teams that know intuitively how to make things work smoothly. The WSJ iPhone app apparently lacks both. The new vertical scrolling which purported to fix the absolutely ridiculous left/right scrolling just took one bad small-screen concept - animated page flips - and made it work just as bad in the other dimension. SMOOTH SCROLLING is how the section headlines work, why not just apply to simple read/scroll behavior inside an article, too? I did figure out you can tease the page up as you read, then let go and "flip" just as you want to scroll. It is less awful then terrible. In this case neither user testing nor intuition is needed - just copy the way it works in the section headlines. Please.

TugTy - Why did WSJ destroy their app?

This was once the best app around. I love the WSJ. But with the move to Newstand, it is buggy, stalls crashes and wastes HOURS of my time trying to fix it. Sorry WSJ, I'm leaving you for the FT.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

Nona365 - 1/5

The good: WSJ. The best source of news on phone. The bad: I hate the flip-page functionality. You can't scroll page on this app. On iPhone u read 4 lines and u should flip the page. It is so tiring for eyes to move you gaze from top to bottom and then on top every 20 seconds or less. (I read fast!!)

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

MrsWaterclown - Missing blogs and no search.

You don't have access to the same content as on the web. No search for past articles.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

Roadrunner45 - Frustrated

This app is nice when it is working. Almost every time I use it and want to read a particular article, the screen goes blank and the app locks up. I have to exit the app, start at the front page again, and try to load that article again. Very frustrating and I am ready to cancel my subscription if a fix does not come out soon

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

Orthotic man - Over priced

News is old. App is flat.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

Manduke - Really buggy. Hard to read

WSJ - Can u make scrolling continuous? I can't move a few lines as I read. That is the normal behavior for phones and your app doesn't support it! This app is just very hard to read.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

PCPL - Mr

The buggiest ap I have ever used. The WSJ should be ashamed. I have reinstalled 5 times. Many articles don't download.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

IceMan~ - I love the Journal, but..

Please remove the pop-up asking the user to rate the app. It's extremely annoying. For that I will leave a 1-star rating. I really enjoy the Wall Street Journal, but I would like to see more sections incorporated into the app to reflect what is shown on the full web site. I think all of the same articles are still available, there are just less sections to pick from because some are combined. One other thing I would like to see improved is the automatic downloads overnight. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I like the idea and convenience of being able to open the paper in the morning without a wait for it to download. And one more thing; it would be really nice if breaking news alerts could be tailored to my liking and were pushed to my iDevices more often. Obviously I do not want pesky things like the result of the USC/UCLA game to be pushed to me. But important breaking news stuff I wouldn't mind being notified of. After all, the USA Today app can deliver breaking news alerts. I think WSJ should be able to do it. By the way, outstanding reporting. This is the only newspaper I will read on a regular basis.

Frank Comments - Problems with current version

Was a great app until the current version which is very unstable. Customer service completely useless.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

Blahblah21335 - Horrible! Still too many bugs!

Unbelievable bad paid app! Still not improved! Unbelievable!

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

Bhavana01123 - New version of app slows my entire iPad to crawl and crashes occasionally. Please fix!!!!!!!

This, in my opinion, is not only a great news app, but THE VERY BEST news app - bar none. I have nearly every major news app, and the Wally J so thoroughly succeeded in thinking from the ground up what a 21st century newspaper 'can' be'. They've gone a long way towards fixing many nettlesome bugs. However, since the most recent upgrade, it feels like the most bloated App I have because nine out of 10 times it literally brings my entire iPad to a crawl (As in -- slow, unresponsive, won't switch screens, won't take any screen tap input of any kind) and occasionally even crashes the entire iPad just by launching the Wall Street Journal App. EPIC fail!! There are a few additional features that would make this indispensable, like a search feature, like the NYTimes has, but all in good time, i'm sure.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

anonymous8943271 - Awful

Forget the unintuitive one page scrolling, if you read 3/4 of the way through a 12 "page" article and have to lock your phone, when you unlock it, you're back on page one and have to tap eight times to get back to where you were. As a bonus the app also refuses to load articles and crashes. By far the worst news reading app I've used on the iPhone. The previous version of the app was much better.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

Acolytec - Please fix the dreadful UI

The artificial one-page at a time interface is terribly annoying, the section-to-section and article-to-article swiping is unpredictable at best and not located in a natural location, and the app opening mechanism consistently hangs if the Internet connection is anything less than perfect.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

sjmetzger - Great newspaper horrible app

With every release, app gets worse, more buggy, content won't load. Now it's in the Apple bookshelf, more work to find it and load it They need to fire the developers, the app quality is going backwards Doesn't even do the basics have to constantly reload WSJ- are you guys even paying attention?

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

Miker B - Articles go to page 1 when you switch between apps

Please fix!

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

Alex34000()$&&; - Wsj app review

Worst app ever. It often stops working, takes time to load. The flipping of the pages is totally unpractical. I really don't like reading news on this app

Date: Device: 5.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

Moserman1290 - Very hard to read

The reading/scrolling is so difficult to use. So difficult to read news titles

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

Bi-Focals in Philly - Improvements?

Started to ignore the request for a review, as usual, but I have been so frustrated by WSJ it warrants commenting. Slow or fails to load MOST OF THE TIME. Shuts down frequently. Every third page is an Ad, which loads slower than anything else- who needs to see the same ad repeatedly in an edition with embedded videos no one watches? And do I really need an "upgrade" practically every month? Get it right, get it fixed and release it ONCE A QUARTER! Have been a subscriber since 1977 and STILL prefer a paper, but can' t count on a timely delivery, so I guess I'm stuck. Maybe the young technology hounds are getting what they want.... But who can read the Journal on an iPhone? Seriously?

Date: Device: 5.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

wall_e - No search function

The scrolling from page to page is not smooth but jumps to the next page. Worst of all there is no search function!

Date: Device: 5.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

stop_a - Crashtastic!

I have a first generation iPad. Of course, the developers have moved on, methinks, to only writing their code for current gens. This latest update is crashtastic! I wish I could go back to the previous rev. The app appears to bum out when changing pages. Finish reviewing a section's headlines or ready to move on from an ad, swipe, and poof! Back to the home screen. It's magical.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

SRO55 - I used to love this app

I used to love this app- but I'm so tired of the crashes and the inability to open today's paper. How difficult is this for the idiots writing the code for this?

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

RAWATSON - DOWNGRADE

Now in Newstand. Terrible. Since this switch, I have rarely read WSJ on my phone. Wish the app did not utilize snap scrolling.

Date: Device: 5.1.1 using The Wall Street Journal.

Luckynka - Not working

Paid subscription excited I will read WSJ on the iPad and it won't load. Keeps getting stuck on the "country edition" page. Please fix!!!
